In short

A 1:43 scale model of chassis 5893, the NART Ferrari 250 LM that gave Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt an unlikely overall victory at Le Mans in 1965 — Ferrari's last to date.

Few results in endurance racing carry as much historical weight as the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans. On 19–20 June 1965, a Ferrari 250 LM entered by Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team crossed the line first, completing 348 laps at an average of approximately 192.2 km/h. This IXO Models die-cast captures that precise car — chassis 5893, race number 21 — in 1:43.

The Ferrari 250 LM: a mid-engined GT berlinetta with a misleading name

Developed directly from the 250 P prototype, the 250 LM is a mid-engined closed berlinetta. Its designation follows Ferrari convention of the era but is technically imprecise: the car uses a 3.3-litre Colombo V12, not the 3.0-litre implied by a strict reading of the '250' name. Ferrari submitted the 250 LM for FIA GT homologation in 1964; the request was controversially denied, which meant every car raced under prototype regulations despite its clearly GT-derived bodywork.

An unlikely win: NART, Gregory, Rindt and the 1965 Le Mans

Gregory and Rindt were not pre-race favourites. The Ford GT40s and factory Ferrari prototypes were. When those machines retired one by one, the understated red-and-white NART entry — a single white nose stripe on a red body — inherited the lead and held it. Their victory is the last overall Le Mans win for Ferrari, a record that still stands in 2024. Jochen Rindt, the Austrian co-driver, went on to become the 1970 Formula 1 World Champion, making this result one of the most significant of his career outside grand prix racing.

IXO Models specialises in affordable 1:43 racing replicas, and this release documents one of the defining results in Ferrari's Le Mans history.

Frequently asked questions

What is the historical significance of this particular Ferrari 250 LM?

Chassis 5893 won the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans outright for the NART team, driven by Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt. It remains Ferrari's last overall Le Mans victory as of 2024.

Who were the drivers of the #21 NART Ferrari at Le Mans in 1965?
