Kurz gesagt

A 1:43 scale model of the dark blue Rob Walker Lotus 49B, chassis raced by Jo Siffert to his only Grand Prix victory at Brands Hatch on 20 July 1968, reproduced in resin by Spark Model.

The 1968 British Grand Prix produced one of the most memorable results of the entire decade: a privately entered car, in private entrant colours, defeating the factory teams on merit. Spark Model captures that moment in resin at 1:43, rendering the Rob Walker dark blue and white livery of car number 22 as Jo Siffert drove it to the top step at Brands Hatch on 20 July 1968.

The Lotus 49B — Colin Chapman's DFV Platform

Designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe, the Lotus 49 first raced in 1967 as the launch vehicle for the Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0-litre V8. The 49B was the developed variant introduced for 1968, distinguishing itself through revised aerodynamics including a high-mounted rear wing. The DFV produced approximately 408 bhp and would go on to become the dominant engine architecture in Formula 1 for years. The 49B measured approximately 4,140 mm in length — a long, narrow machine built around that stressed engine acting as a structural member.

20 July 1968 — A Privateer's Finest Hour

Jo Siffert started from the second row at Brands Hatch and inherited the lead when Chris Amon's Ferrari retired. The Swiss driver then held off the chasing pack — including Amon, who rejoined, and Jack Brabham — to take the chequered flag. It was the only Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix victory of Siffert's career, and it came not with a works team but with the Rob Walker Racing Team, carrying car number 22 in Walker's signature dark blue with white nose stripe rather than the Gold Leaf red, white and gold of the works Lotus 49Bs running at the same race. Privateer victories of this weight essentially ceased in Formula 1 shortly afterwards.

Spark Model at 1:43 — Resin Construction, Photo-Etched Detail

Spark Model produces this Lotus 49B No. 22 as a 1:43 scale model in resin, consistent with the brand's standard Formula 1 production process. Resin bodies allow Spark to capture fine surface geometry — including the 49B's aerodynamic bodywork and high rear wing profile — while photo-etched metal parts handle the finer structural elements. The Rob Walker dark blue livery with white nose stripe and race number 22 are faithfully reproduced, distinguishing this model clearly from any Gold Leaf works Lotus variant of the same period.

In the Display Cabinet — Scale, Space and Context

At 1:43, the model measures approximately 9.5 cm in length. That compact footprint suits a focused late-1960s Formula 1 shelf alongside a Ferrari 312 representing Chris Amon's car from the same race, or a Gold Leaf Lotus 49B of Graham Hill or Jochen Rindt for direct livery contrast. The model also sits naturally in a Rob Walker Racing Team collection, a Ford Cosworth DFV-era grouping, or a Jo Siffert driver retrospective that might extend to his Porsche sports car campaigns of the same period.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How big is the 1:43 scale model?

The real Lotus 49B measured approximately 4,140 mm in length. Divided by 43, that gives a model length of roughly 96 mm — or about 9.5 cm. At that size the car fits comfortably on a standard collector shelf, though the high rear wing adds a little vertical presence above the bodyline.

Does the model have opening parts?

No. Spark Model's 1:43 resin Formula 1 subjects are sealed one-piece body constructions with no opening panels. Detail is concentrated on the exterior surfaces: the bodywork contours, the high-mounted rear wing, the dark blue Rob Walker livery, race number 22, and photo-etched metal components throughout.

Who made this model and what material is it?

It is made by Spark Model, a specialist producer of resin 1:43 Formula 1 and motorsport subjects. The body is cast in resin with photo-etched metal detail parts — a construction that allows fine reproduction of the 49B's aerodynamic surfaces and livery graphics.

Why is Jo Siffert's 1968 British GP win significant for collectors?

It was the only Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix victory of Siffert's career, achieved with the privately entered Rob Walker Lotus 49B rather than a works car. The Rob Walker dark blue livery is visually distinct from the Gold Leaf works Lotus colours of the same season, making this one of the more historically specific and emotionally resonant 1960s Grand Prix subjects available at 1:43.
