# BMW M Scale Models: History, Icons and How to Collect Them

**By Vroomi Models** · 2026-10-20

> In short
>
> BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded on 1 May 1972 with 35 employees. In the decades since, BMW M has produced some of the most successful racing cars in touring car and GT history, from the 3.0 CSL "Batmobile" and the E30 M3 to today's M4 GT3 EVO and the M Hybrid V8, which finished second overall at the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans. BMW M scale models are available in 1:43, 1:18 and 1:12 from makers such as Spark Model, Werk83, Minichamps, KK Scale, TrueScale, GT Spirit, Solido and Otto-Mobile. This guide goes through each era and the models that represent it.

Few car brands give a scale model collector as much material as BMW M. What began in 1972 as a 35-person racing department, set up under board member Robert A. Lutz and run by former Porsche works driver Jochen Neerpasch, has produced touring car legends, Le Mans prototypes and a long line of M road cars. Today they are all available in miniature, side by side, in 1:43, 1:18 and 1:12. This guide follows the story era by era, with the models that tell it best.

## The 3.0 CSL and the European touring car years

The 3.0 CSL was the first serious weapon of BMW Motorsport GmbH. CSL stands for Coupé Sport Leichtbau, or lightweight coupé: the road car used thinner steel, aluminium doors, bonnet and boot lid, and less sound insulation. In 1973 the racing version received a homologated aerodynamic kit with a deep front spoiler, fins on the front wings, a roof spoiler and a tall rear wing. The wing was not legal on German roads, so it was delivered in the boot, and the car was soon nicknamed the "Batmobile".

Toine Hezemans won the 1973 European Touring Car Championship in the CSL, and with Dieter Quester he also took a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year. The CSL went on to win the European title every year from 1975 to 1979. It was also the first BMW to carry the blue, violet and red M stripes, still the division's signature today.

## The M1 and the Procar series

The M1 (E26) is the turning point of the BMW M story. Presented at the 1978 Paris Motor Show, it is still the only mid-engined BMW ever sold to the public. Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign penned the glass-fibre body. Lamborghini was originally contracted to develop and build the car, but the agreement ended in 1978 and production moved to Italian and German suppliers, with final assembly at Baur in Stuttgart. About 450 were built between 1978 and 1981.

Its 3.5-litre M88 straight-six, with 277 PS in road form, later powered the M635 CSi and the first M5. To promote the car, BMW created the Procar Championship in 1979: a one-make series run before European Grands Prix, where Formula 1 drivers raced identical M1s.

Together they make one of the most coherent small collections in the BMW M catalogue.

## The E30 M3: the touring car benchmark

The E30 M3 was presented at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show and built from 1986 to 1991 as a Group A homologation special. Its first racing season, 1987, set the tone: Roberto Ravaglia won the World Touring Car Championship, Eric van de Poele the DTM and Winfried Vogt the European title, all in an M3. Ravaglia added the 1989 DTM title, and the car won the Nürburgring and Spa 24 Hours several times. Many consider it the most successful touring car ever built.

The E30 also had a long career in Italy. For something less conventional, Solido's 1:18 of the [E30 M3 Advan Rally Drift Team](/products/bmw-3-series-m3-e30-advan-rally-drift-team-1801521) shows a very different side of the car.

## The M635 CSi and the E36 M3

Alongside the M3, the M635 CSi (E24) was BMW M's grand tourer. It used a version of the M1's M88 engine, and the closely related 635 CSi won the European Touring Car Championship in 1983 with Dieter Quester and in 1986 with Roberto Ravaglia. KK Scale has made the M635 CSi in 1:12, a size that suits the car's long bonnet and pillarless side windows: the [red 1987 version](/products/bmw-6-series-m635-csi-e24-coupe-1987-re-kkdc120165) and the [white version with Alpina wheels](/products/bmw-6-series-m635-csi-e24-coupe-1987-c-kkdc120164a) both have opening doors and bonnet.

The E36 M3, built from 1992 to 1999, took the M3 to a much wider audience. Werk83's 1:18 of [Frank Schmickler's Team Linder No. 9 from the 1994 DTM](/products/bmw-3-series-m3-e36-coupe-team-linder-n-9-dtm-season-1994-frank-schmickler-188049) covers the racing side, while Solido's [E36 M3 Polizei in 1:18](/products/bmw-3-series-m3-e36-coupe-polizei-1991-whi-1803915) brings in the car's everyday image.

## Modern BMW M road cars

Today's M range covers more body styles and powertrains than ever: the G80 M3 saloon, the first M3 Touring (G81), the M5 Touring (G99), the compact M2 (G87) and the electric M50 models. Scale model coverage is just as wide.

## The M4 GT3 and M4 GT3 EVO

The M4 GT3 raced from 2022 with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six (P58) and won the DTM title in its first season with Sheldon van der Linde. When the EVO version was presented at the Nürburgring in May 2024, the car had already won more than 70 races. The EVO, which raced from 2025, brought revised aerodynamics, suspension and brakes.

## The M Hybrid V8 at Le Mans

The M Hybrid V8 is BMW M's most complex racing programme. It is built on a Dallara carbon-fibre chassis and uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 derived from the engine BMW raced in the DTM, combined with a hybrid system under the LMDh rules. Run by Team WRT, it raced in IMSA from 2023 and in the World Endurance Championship from 2024, when BMW returned to the top class at Le Mans for the first time since its 1999 win with the V12 LMR.

The breakthrough came in 2026: the No. 20 of Robin Frijns, René Rast and Sheldon van der Linde finished second overall at Le Mans, less than 11 seconds behind the winning Toyota, giving BMW its first overall podium there since 1999.

## How to build a BMW M collection

### 1:43: the whole story on one shelf

1:43 offers the widest range of races at the lowest cost per model. Spark Model and TrueScale cover the DTM, the Nürburgring, Daytona, Suzuka and Le Mans, so you can follow a whole M4 GT3 season without needing much space.

### 1:18: the main format

1:18 is where BMW M collecting is richest. Werk83 is the specialist for period racing cars, Minichamps covers today's road and racing cars, Spark Model offers milestone race cars, and Solido and GT Spirit cover modern road cars at different price points. In 1:18 you can go from the 3.0 CSL to the M Hybrid V8 in a single display.

### 1:12: one or two statement pieces

KK Scale's 1:12 range focuses on classic BMW road cars, including the 3.0 CSL and the M635 CSi. At this size, details such as the interior and engine bay become a real part of the display.

### Collect by era

A simple structure is to pick one model per era: the 3.0 CSL, an M1 Procar, an E30 M3, an M4 GT3 and the M Hybrid V8. Five models cover more than fifty years of BMW M. You can then grow each chapter, for example with every Procar driver or every M4 GT3 at Le Mans. See every current model in the [BMW](/collections/bmw-diecast-model-cars) collection.

## Frequently asked questions

Which scale is best for BMW M models?

1:18 offers the best mix of detail and choice, with Werk83 for classic racing cars, Minichamps for current road and racing cars and Solido for more affordable road cars. 1:43 is ideal if you want to follow many races. 1:12 suits one or two key road cars, such as the KK Scale 3.0 CSL or M635 CSi.

Which makers produce BMW M racing models?

Werk83 specialises in period BMW racing cars in 1:18, including the M1 Procar and the E36 M3 DTM. Spark Model covers many races in 1:43 and key cars in 1:18. Minichamps makes the M4 GT3 in 1:18, and TrueScale covers recent M4 GT3 EVO entries in 1:43.

Which BMW M models should a new collector start with?

A Werk83 M1 Procar in 1:18, a Spark Model E30 M3 in 1:43 and a modern M road car in 1:18, such as the M3 G80 or M3 Touring G81. Three models covering more than forty years of BMW M.

What is the difference between resin and die-cast BMW M models?

Resin models, such as those from Werk83, GT Spirit, TrueScale and Otto-Mobile, usually have sharper detail and no opening parts. Die-cast models, such as those from Minichamps, Solido and KK Scale, are sturdier and often have opening doors and bonnets.

What does the M in BMW M stand for?

M stands for Motorsport. The division was founded in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH and renamed BMW M GmbH in 1993, when its work grew beyond racing to include road cars, BMW Individual and driver training.
